Today we dive into the fascinating world of sea rescue and present you a very special model building kit: The Seenotkreuzer “Hermann Marwede (Revell Shoplink)” in 1:200 scale from Revell. This model is not only a real highlight for ship lovers but also for everyone who is enthusiastic about modern rescue technology.

The Technology of the Hermann Marwede

The “Hermann Marwede” is not just any ship, it is the largest sea rescue cruiser of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) and is even considered the largest sea rescue cruiser in the world. With its impressive 46 meters length, it is a true colossus and the only representative of the 46-meter class in the German sea rescue fleet and has an enormous total engine power of 6,800 kW (9,250 hp) distributed across three powerful engines: A center engine with 2,720 kW (3,700 hp) and two side engines with 2,040 kW (2,775 hp) each. This enables a maximum speed of 25 knots (approx. 46 km/h) over a range of 2,200 nautical miles thanks to a large fuel supply of 60,000 liters and 20,000 liters of fresh water supply.

What Makes the “Hermann Marwede” So Special?

First of all, its sheer size and performance capability. It was specifically designed for operations in the rough North Sea and can withstand even the harshest weather conditions. The fully enclosed bridge protects the crew and sensitive equipment from wind and waves – a real novelty in cruiser construction.

Another highlight is the powerful fire extinguishing system. With three fire monitors on the rear superstructure, the “Hermann Marwede” can discharge up to 42,000 liters of water per minute – that is more than impressive and makes it versatile for various rescue operations.

The special equipment includes, for example, the fully enclosed bridge for protecting the crew and sensitive equipment and the powerful fire extinguishing system with three fire monitors that can discharge up to 42,000 liters of water per minute. Medical emergencies can be treated immediately in the onboard hospital, and particularly severe cases can be transported directly to land via air support over the helicopter deck.

Missions of the Hermann Marwede

The Hermann Marwede has been involved in over 600 remarkable missions since its commissioning in 2003 and has covered a distance that would go around the world five and a half times. It is worth taking a look at the logbook of the over 20-year history of this largest sea rescue cruiser of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS).
There you learn, for example:

  • how the Hermann Marwede rescued 8 wind farm technicians after a fire broke out in the engine room of the wind farm vessel “World Calima”
  • how two sailors were rescued from the wooden sailing cutter Sueno after they could only just send a distress call before the radio antenna failed
  • how a guest of a passenger ship moored at the pier in Helgoland could be rescued from the 13-degree cold North Sea at 3 a.m.

The DGzRS website has many more spectacular stories that show how important the deployment and operation of the sea rescuers is. So think about supporting the important service with a donation.

The Crew of the Hermann Marwede

The regular crew of the “Hermann Marwede” consists of 16 navigators and technicians, seven of whom serve around the clock for two weeks. This means they are 24/7 on standby to be able to depart at any time. After 14 days, the relief follows, followed by 14 days off. This constant readiness and dedication of the crew is impressive – can you imagine a 14-day continuous duty?

The Model Kit

Now to the model kit for advanced crafters at Level 4. In 1:200 scale, the model with 78 individual parts still reaches a length of about 23 cm, a real eye-catcher for any collection. (Revell Shoplink)
The kit offers you the opportunity to replicate this impressive sea rescue cruiser down to the smallest detail. What makes the build particularly interesting? Well, you have the chance to trace the unique technology and design of this special ship on a small scale. From the enclosed bridge to the fire monitors — every detail tells a story about the function and importance of this rescue cruiser.

  • Two-part hull with bow thrusters
  • Surrounding railing
  • Detailed deck superstructures
  • Authentic radar mast
  • Precise detail accuracy that realistically reproduces the original ship
  • Promotes fine motor skills and spatial imagination

Tips for Building

If you tackle the build, take your time for the details. The “Hermann Marwede” has many interesting features that are worth working out particularly carefully. Pay special attention to the coloring, the characteristic white and orange of DGzRS ships should be implemented as true to the original as possible.A special tip: Try to capture the dynamics of the ship. The “Hermann Marwede” is not a static display piece but a ship that often operates under extreme conditions. Perhaps you can present the model in a North Sea diorama so that it looks like it’s plowing through high waves?
